Alexander Calder Chess Set

Calder's own 1944 chess set, 3D-scanned from the one he kept at home

Alexander Calder Chess Set

Calder designed this set for The Imagery of Chess in 1944, then kept it — this edition was scanned from the physical set that lived in his Connecticut home, not from drawings. The pieces abandon black and white for Calder’s own palette, and they read as small sculptures first and game pieces second. Released by Cahiers d’Art with the Calder Foundation.
