Its name means “Centennial Cypress,” but the joke is that this Montezuma cypress is barely thirty years old. It was planted in January 1996 to mark exactly 400 years since Diego de Montemayor founded Monterrey in 1596, a gift from Carlos Alanís, then head of Mexico’s largest urban-tree nursery. A time capsule went into the ground the same year, sealed until 2046 — the day this “centennial” tree turns fifty.
