Caribbean laborers who dug the Panama Canal built this chapel themselves, between 1909 and 1910, in their off hours — in a tenement district of small wooden shacks raised on posts to keep the insects out. It’s now a free museum a short walk from the 5 de Mayo metro station, telling the story of workers who built a canal and then faced deportation drives and citizenship denials once it was finished.
