At 8 rue de la Poissonnerie in old Nice, a man and a woman face each other across a first-floor window, carved into the wet render in 1584 — the date is cut beside them, with the initials LT. Their modesty is a garland of leaves and fruit, and each holds a cougourdon, the local gourd. Dragons run along the north side and a serpent coils in the branches, which is where the name came from.
