23rd Street Mural

An Austin wall painted in 1973–74 that its three artists kept adding to for fifty years

23rd Street Mural

Kerry Awn, Rick Turner and Tommy Bee painted this wall near the University of Texas in 1973–74, and kept coming back to add to it for fifty years. Armadillos, Willie Nelson, moon towers and legendary music clubs share the surface; the 2014 restoration folded back the upper-left corner to reveal South Congress. The mural project’s website lets you click figures on a high-resolution copy to watch short documentaries about each.
